What is “La Garance” ?

La Garance, the root of our name

When we chose to call our estate Domaine des Garances, it was no accident. Madder root is not just a plant. It is memory, color, root. It tells an ancient story, both rustic and precious, just like our land and our work.

A discreet plant, a brilliant dye

Madder (Rubia tinctorum) is a perennial plant that grows wild in the south of France. It can be recognized by its small yellow flowers, but beneath the surface lies its real treasure: its root. From this root is extracted an intense red pigment - alizarin - used for centuries to dye fabrics, uniforms and even oriental carpets. This deep red has long been one of Europe's most prized colors.

A plant with character

Like the vine, madder loves poor, dry, stony soil. It anchors itself deeply, patiently, and draws its richness from places where others see only harshness. It's this quiet strength, this hidden beauty, that we love in madder - and that we want to bring to life in our wines.

A link to the terroir

Today, madder is less cultivated, but it hasn't disappeared. It is still present in certain wastelands, and sometimes even on the edges of our vine rows. It symbolizes an ancient link between man and plant, between the earth and its noblest extracts: color, taste and memory.
